As we all know, Barrack Obama is the presumptive Democratic nominee. He has won more states, won more votes, and is far ahead in the delegate count. Barring some sort of major setback far worse than the Jeremiah Wright scandal, this primary election is over. However, we also know that Hillary Clinton is refusing to surrender, and according to all of the major polls, she is heading toward a lopsided forty point win in tonight's primary. Although this result will not change who our eventual nominee is, depending on how the loss is spun, the loss could adversely affect his general election prospects if we allow the media to go forward with the meme that Obama is not in touch with "real, hardworking Americans." It appears that CNN is already running with this story. So how do we counter this line of attack!
Follow me below the fold.
The Obama surrogates need to confront this head on by preparing a response ahead of time. Here's my suggested talking points that should be repeated over and over again.
- Obama is still winning this race by every metric. He has won more states; he has won more pledged delegates; he has more committed super-delegates; and he also leads the popular vote.
- Obama does not have a problem with hard working Americans or rural voters. He has carred more states than Hillary Clinton, and his wins include some of our nation's most rural states including Wyoming, Idaho, Utah, Iowa, ect. ect.
- John McCain finished in third place in West Virginia with only 1% of the final vote in that state. If Obama's loss tonight raises questions about his connection with hard working rural voters, what does McCain's showing say about his ability to connect with hard working rural voters?
Obama's campaign could probably refine these statements and make them more palatable for sound bite TV, but they need to hammer these three points home!
